Seventeen

May 1, 2017

Apparently, 17 is the 'least random number' per the Hacker's Jargon File. http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/R/random-numbers.html

There's a website www.vinc17.org that delves deeply into all things 17, like:

Shakespeare wrote 17 comedies in the 17th century, and Beethoven wrote 17 string quartets.

At that same link, it's noted that Seventeen is a prime number, along with being the sum of the first four primes (2+3+5+7=17), AND there are a ton of additional mathematical seventeens at that same website, few of which I grasp with any real depth, but if that's your thing, go to town, my friends.

There are over 1,000 hits on AZ lyrics.com for songs with the number 17 in the title, from Marina and the Diamonds, to Foreigner, to Tim McGraw.

My hands down favorite has always been from Stevie Nicks, "Edge of Seventeen" which contains the lyrics:

"And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own
I begin again"

I poked around a bit this morning for some interesting seventeen quotes, and there are plenty, although interestingly enough, most of them are inadvertent, which plays into the idea that it's truly the least random number.

I found this one particularly amusing, although I don't golf, if I did, I suspect it would end similarly ;)

"It took me seventeen years to get three thousand hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course." -Hank Aaron

And then there's this by Sam Kinison which speaks (loudly) to me:
Folks, I've been straight for seventeen days... Not all in a row.

Seventeens are important to me, starting with my seventeenth birthday which I won't go into in detail, but leave to your imaginings. It was nice.

I moved out of my folks home when I was 17. Started college at 17.

My first date with my husband was on the 17th. Some years later, we got married on the 17th. Every month on the 17th, we try to do something special. <3

Today marks 17 years of abstinence from alcohol. That's longer than the entire lifetimes of my two youngest, but was sadly three years into my daughter's life. Those are years I won't get back, and that's one of my few regrets in life, but I can't change it. And I am grateful for all the years we've had since. Love you, sweetie.

Seventeen years down. Looking forward to the next seventeen.

"And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own
I begin again"
